Okay Was talking with Dave Woodson yesterday about SM and made a comment about someone doing it wrong and hurting themselves. Being an open leader isn’t a good thing if you are a tool. The dude over at Scott-e-vest obviously is one and would better serve his company by not speaking. Granted, I’d never heard of them before this so to some that’s a “marketing win.”

Was just going to send Dave the links but thought maybe some others might enjoy seeing this as well. I would have just tweeted a link to it but it’s kind of all over the place on Loren’s site (didn’t categorize a couple) so thought easier to just put here with a few notes.

It all started with a “funny” story from Loren.

Which got followed up by this great piece by Loren going off on the response to the video by the CEO of SeV

Now, I thought that was awesome enough, but then the CEO of SeV just wouldn’t let it go and dropped these next great ones that Loren shared.

http://www.1938media.com/definition-of-a-dope/

http://www.1938media.com/a-message-from-the-ceo-of-scott-e-vest/

http://www.1938media.com/scott-e-vest-review/

You have to listen to the voicemails in the second one to truly appreciate how bad this guy can make himself and his clothing brand look. He even talks about how this is helping get the word out about the brand in the last posts VM.

Some people like to say you can’t do it wrong in Social Media but I think this is a pretty clear case of someone who is screwing the pooch. While I am not a huge fan of the puppet bit and the people he interviews, Loren did an awesome job with this and love his Monday Matter/Tech Tuesday bits. He’s one of those people who is willing to point out what these other marketing peeps don’t want you to hear.

So Dave (and anyone else), enjoy.

Okay I was starting this post because Joe Porter had made a tweet about people using flash for video and not using youTube of vimeo. He deleted the tweet almost instantly but being Hootsuite doesn’t remove deleted tweets I still saw it and it sits there. Here is the original tweet :)

jpapapnp - When will websites stop using flash for video? I can’t view it on my phone. Use YouTube or vimeo to embed it please!

We then had a few more tweets back and forth that I will also get into but will start there.

Okay the first thing to really think about is who controls your video. Now you can control some parts of it from youtube but in the end you are always giving up some of the control when you host it elsewhere. Most people don’t care about these things as just having a free place to put up videos is great. But for a company, you may not want your video showing up with ads on it for competing products or shady products. As well the related videos on the side could also be the same. Now you can pay to get a lot of that control back as well as try to brand the pages to fit your business better but that’s additional cost.

Here is an additional note that came up once the discussion went farther and Joe sent me a few screenshots from his iPhone to show me that there were a few wrong things with the original argument in that embeds don’t really work that well from those sites on your own either. Youtube works through an extra app and vimeo you have to go to their site for it to work.

As a whole video on mobile is just a big mess at the moment so to expect people to try to work around things just so your device works is asking a ton. Especially when most sites won’t see huge amounts of traffic from these devices (here at a Uni we see <1% on the site as a whole.) You are putting a ton of extra work so 1 or 2 peeps might view it.

As well, Flash is the defacto standard for video playing on desktop browsers. You know that when you put it out there as such that you are basically guaranteed that it will play (forget the high 90′s percent that they have off the top of my head.) Not all browsers support HTML5 or even the video codex that you might have choosen to put your file in (Ogg vs h264). While it’s nice to have the mobile be able to play it and it will be of value in the future, it’s best to just wait it out and let more things come together before making decisions on how you want to handle it.

Another point that came up was related to Flash in general and while I agree that Flash in general has taken some giant hits I also feel that it’s still a much needed tool and will always be needed. All the cool animations became better handled with JS and soon HTML5 will be the way to handle video online. But the thing is all these things were all catching up to what Flash could already do. The HTML5 spec is being designed for what would be best now, not the future. We don’t know what cool thing we will wish we had in the future and when we do figure that out it will takes years to get a spec and and all of the browsers to support it. With flash they can implement it as quickly as they want and roll it out to everyone for use. No waiting on standards or browsers.

I don’t see this being a huge need, as we can do a lot of really amazing things already and most people are still trying to come to grips with what we currently can do let alone think about what would be cool going forward but eventually that will come up and Flash is always in the best position to adjust for that. I also think it will still be around and have the huge install base because of legacy support for all those flash sites that will never go away. But only the future will really tell.

Gibberish Gibberish Gibberish. Bullshit Bullshit Bullshit.

Lets just spew whatever we can so that we can say we wrote an article quickly. Let’s not do any real research for it, lets just spew garbage.

We are going to drive lots of people to our place with this wonderful exercise in Inbound marketing because if you write it they will magically show. Saying something of value and actually directed at what you are trying to get from hem doesn’t matter. Why would it? We can write about whatever and then take the fact that it got Retweeted by 20 people (all run by myself) and say mission accomplished I got 40 people to read an article that says absolutely nothing. But hey that’s Inbound marketing for you.

Why would you want to actually research whatever it is we are going to say, lets just go to mashable or techcrunch (no time to link I’m trying to be fast) and just look at headlines and then write a couple hundreed words on what I got from that headline. Screw reading the article. Screw understanding that the logic they used to justify that headline was complete garbage. Why would I want to disprove that which is obviously wrong when that would make my own ideas seem bad then? Why would I want to show that my profession is a complete joke that does nothing but convince people they need my snake oil to cure their marketing problems. Why?

Gibberish Gibberish Gibberish. Bullshit Bullshit Bullshit.

@davewoodson mentioned he needed to do a top 10 list of how to know your SEO expert is full of shit. I decided to make my own using my mastery of the craft of asshattery (WTF chrome, asshattery is a word, quit telling me it’s not spelled right.) So here are my top 10 ways to tell if your guy is full of shit.

1) His/her name is Dave Woodson

2) If you search for “Indiana FHA expert” and he/she shows up

3) He/she makes videos for their blog while driving

4) In previously mentioned videos, he/she says their website at the beginning and end, both times being the wrong site.

5) He/she has ever declared to a room full of people they are “your mayor”

6) Once blew a man in the parking lot of La Bambas so he/she could get an Avacado Burrito

7) He/she wears pink shorts

8) He/she write a blog about having the biggest cock in the world

9) Had to shut down previously mentioned blog once said cock was removed from his mouth

10) Someone else’s dog is the mayor of their own house on foursquare.

So grade your current SEO/SM expert and see how they did. Wait they hit 10 out of 10? I feel sorry for you.

Hehe, I kid the Dave and you all better know it. He’s a good guy and can take a joke. He does know a thing or 2 about SEO and SM and you should look him up to talk about it. What’s even better is, unlike a lot of people who actually are completely worthless and full of shit when it comes to those things, is that he will talk with you about it for free instead of charging you 100′s for classes that teach you the wrong way to do things. So come to a #nwitweetup and converse. I’m sure you are bound to pick up a thing or 2 you probably didn’t already know.

Okay, so talking with @IndianaBlueJay about how much Linux sucks to install, which I agree but for slightly differing resaons. So here is my counter points. :)

On the driver issue, the economic issue is that the % of people that use linux total isn’t enough to justify the costs. The number of distributions doesn’t really matter because the driver “should” would with any distro using a standard kernal (though again this doesn’t mean they are up to date but any mainstream distro will be.) Now it may not be packaged nicely but pretty much for any Red Hat or Debian will have a something setup for them, or using other tools that can convert them.

Part of the prob is that if these vendors were more open themselves then they could use each other to reduce the development costs or even open it up for others to write them from the community. They are so worried about their “secrets” that they won’t though. If they would just accept that 99% of what they do isn’t special or even actually original it would help but they don’t like to believe that everyone else can figure out the obvious.

As for the comments on Windows having security vulnerabilities, the only one that I know of is the stupid users. The problem is that everyone blames windows that they have spyware but guess what, they installed it themselves when they hit yes to every popup and open every attachment. I wish all these idiots would buy Macs so then Mac could be the “most vulnerable” system. Yes were there things that were related to parts of windows being compromised, yes, but that really isn’t the case anymore and hasn’t been for a while. Most holes are created by software they install. Recently I had Google Chrome try to install a virus on my computer all by itself. Luckily Sophos caught it instantly. Chrome basically let some website I went to redirect me to another site and began downloading a “fake AV” program without ever prompting me if it was cool. Luckily I am able to recognize this but most users can’t. (I will also say the not running as admin is a good step, but after having watched someone type in the admin password after prompted by an install without even thinking it doesn’t help that much.)

Back to Linux though, I think the bigger problem is that people expect that it should just work, when really, if they had to install windows on a random machine they would probably have tons of issues too. And without having a main stream distributor pushing Linux you won’t get people seeing it working without thought like other systems. You shouldn’t have to get “under the hood” but you have to put everyone on a level playing field to start and comparing to a system that was basically installed by someone else who has put way more thought into it isn’t a fair comparison.

Basically sick of breaking up tweets or trying to fit in 140 chars. Will now use this to brain dump and to get my thoughts out their quicker on some topics. Lots of times I want to expand more and say I need to write a full blog post on it full of facts being backed up and such but then I never am able to get to them. So mainly going to use this to dump ideas quickly and not put as much research into them. If I then find some magical item that gives me time I may expand more on it but overall it’s better to get something out there then nothing. Also maybe if people respond to a specific topic might drive me to get to that full post sooner.

Oh well enjoy my Mental Dumps :)
